Make your work visible. This is one of the biggest problems Software Developers (we) have.

☝🏼 The problem: When a company grows, you need to do more than do the work if you want to get the next promotion.

👉🏼 You need visibility.

There are multiple ways to gain visibility as Software Developers. Possibly, some make you feel uncomfortable; that’s ok, I believe there are some others where you will be comfortable.

In today’s session, I want to explain to you one of the techniques that will make your work more visible in your organization.

🙋🏻‍♀️ Participate in Technical Discussions where you Feel Comfortable

It seems simple, but it’s not; moreover, if you are an introverted person.

The idea is: Participate by contributing something.

👉🏼 I would recommend proceeding like this:

1. Pick up the next meeting. See the list of incoming meetings you have in your calendar. Focus on the technical ones.

2. Understand the goal of the meeting and what it is about. If you have doubts, reply to the organizer asking about: Agenda and goals.

3. Is this a meeting that addresses themes you're interested in and feel comfortable with? Prepare yourself. Get your brain up to speed, prepare notes, and focus.

4. Ask for the floor and intervene. During the meeting, find a moment to intervene and contribute to the conversation. This could be your opinion about some aspects of the conversation based on your previous experience, provide some clarification, or set another point of view. There's no need for your message to be long, but ensure it’s clear; practice it in advance if you feel better.

👉🏼 With this, you gain visibility among your peers and beyond, mainly if the meeting is full of people from other teams and organization branches.

I know, now you are thinking:

But Marcos, what could I contribute with?

That’s your imposter syndrome talking. I’m pretty sure there is something you can contribute to, just focus.

I know concrete cases where people cannot use this technique to gain visibility, and that’s ok if you feel you are in this case, but do not make it your default excuse for not trying!
